1998年頃のかなり昔の話。上海で所用があり広東省の汕頭(Swatow)からの帰路、上海に立ち寄った。
ホテルはヒルトンを取ったが、当時の上海は都市整備の真っ最中で、そこかしこでビルの建設中だったが、周囲は土を掘り返した荒地ばかりだった。
宿泊したヒルトンもご多聞にもれず荒地の中に立つビルと言う感じだった。
用事を済ませてホテルに戻ろうとタクシーに乗ったが、ヒルトンと言ったのについたホテルはシェラトンだった。
後から分かったのだが、ヒルトンは中国語で希爾頓(Xierdun)だが発音を聞くとシェラトンの中国読み喜来登(Xilaideng)と聞こえる。
日本人からすると識別がつかないほど似ている。タクシードライバーが間違えても不思議ではなかった。

A long time ago, around 1998. I had some business in Shanghai, so I stopped by Shanghai on my way back from Swatow in Guangdong Province.
I reserved the Hilton hotel in Shanghai, but at that time Shanghai was in the midst of urban development,
and buildings were being constructed here and there, but the surrounding area was nothing but wasteland that had been dug up.
The Hilton I stayed at was like a building standing in the middle of a wasteland.
I took a taxi to finish my errands and go back to the hotel, but the hotel where I arrived was the Sheraton instead of the Hilton.
I later found out that Hilton's name in Chinese is Xierdun, but if you listen to the pronunciation,
it sounds like Sheraton's Chinese reading Xilaideng. They look so similar that Japanese people can't tell them apart.
No wonder the taxi driver made a mistake.
