2022年6月17日 香りと記憶5 街に広がる香りは場所を思い出させる
やはり各土地の料理や食材の香りはその土地の記憶と密接に結び付くようだ。
そしてその香りは特定の情景や場所ではなく国全体を思い出させる。
中国ではあちこちで八角の香りがするが、日本でその香りに出合うと中国を思い出す。
今ではパクチーと呼ばれるコリアンダーはタイを、ドリアンはシンガポールを思い出させると言った具合だ。
決して名産だからと言う訳ではなく、初めて食べたのがたまたまそれらの国だったと言うだけで極めて自分勝手な香りと記憶の連想ゲームなのだが、
脳が勝手に結び付けてしまったのだから仕方がない。
ドリアンやパクチーなら別の国の方がポピュラーだ、美味しいのだ等と言うお叱りは甘んじて受けるしかない。
Scent and memory 5: The scent spreading in the city reminds me of a place, June 17th, 2022
After all, it seems that the scent of each region's cuisine and ingredients is closely linked to the memories of that region.
And the scent reminds me not of a particular scene or place, but of an entire country.
In China, there smell the octagon everywhere, and when I come across that scent in Japan, it reminds me of China.
Coriander, now called “Pak chee”, reminded me of Thailand and durian reminded me of Singapore.
It's not because it's a specialty, it's just that the first time I ate in those countries,
so it's an extremely selfish association game of scent and memory,
but it can't be helped because my brain has arbitrarily connected it.
If durian and coriander are more popular in another country, or they are delicious,
we have no choice but to accept the scolding.
