Miyakojima customs, March 1st, 2022
It was when I went to Miyakojima. I was drinking at a tavern with my colleagues. It was a tavern,
so it was quite natural being noisy, but I’ve heard strange sounds here and there.
I suddenly noticed that one of my colleagues who went to the bathroom didn't come back.
I was wondering if he was feeling sick, but after a while he came back being heavy drunk.
Apparently he got caught by a customer group at another table.
Miyakojima has a custom of drinking at once called "Otori", and it seems that everyone repeats
drinking at once by shaking a pot containing water, ice and awamori. It was this sound that was heard here
and there. It seems that participants of “Otori” should drink all at once when his/her turn comes,
and it does not end in one round. My colleague was caught to the circle of locals because he was from Tokyo.
